The Whirlpool Galaxy, M51, is a classic "grand design" spiral galaxy whose spiral pattern may have been initiated in a close encounter with its small companion. It has Hubble class Sc (unbarred open spiral with small bulge). This image was taken from the SEDS Messier database.
